Fossilized Tusk and Amber Hand carved Phoenix Pendant

The phoenix, a mythical creature with a powerful symbolic life, takes center stage in this hand carved phoenix pendant that features ancient materials. The phoenix makes his winged presence known in many cultures throughout the world from Native American traditions to Russian and Chinese incarnations of the dynamic bird. The phoenix’s strength is its immortality, thereby symbolizing the soul and the cycle of life. The Phoenix rises from the ashes of a fire it creates to resurrect and live again.

Our designers have celebrated the cycle of life, death, and rebirth in this phoenix necklace with a focus on circular themes and materials that date back many centuries. In this phoenix pendant the bird’s wings touch the amber sun, completing the cycle. The circular amber sun is another nod to the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth.

The phoenix’s body is carved from fossilized ivory, specifically walrus ivory that has lain buried between 300 and 5,000 years. Our fossilized walrus ivory is gathered by the Yupik of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, where only they have the right to collect this important economic and cultural resource. The Yupik use the fossilized walrus ivory in their own carvings and also sell/trade it. Minerals in the earth stain the fossilized ivory a bevy of gorgeous earth tones, making it a material greatly valued for its singular quality.
