Fossilized Ivory, Blue Topaz, and Silver Turtle Pendant

Zealandia’s turtle jewelry collection has been a highlight of the line for many years. Collectors connect with this totemic animal for its very special symbolism. The turtle has come to represent grounding, emotional balance, age-old wisdom and persistence. Turtles carve a peaceful and graceful path through life. They cross the barrier between land and water with ease, and they epitomize a kind of knowing that we can sense in their serene, wizened faces.

We created this blue topaz and sterling silver turtle pendant to honor the connection between turtles and the water. Water has come to represent the psyche and the emotional realms—a world the turtle knows well. Set in sterling silver and wearing hand-carved, hand-inked spirals on his fossilized ivory shell, this turtle moves toward the water with purpose and certainty. This turtle necklace as a whole symbolizes the meeting of wisdom and the psyche—a union and a journey in one.

The fossilized walrus ivory used for the turtle’s shell is some 500 to 3,000 years old. It has lain buried in the earth for centuries where minerals stain it a range of rich colors from pale cream to deep coffee. The native Yupik of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, gather it for sale, trade, and carvings of their own. It is a valued resource for the Yupik, and is also revered throughout the art community for its quality and rich coloring.
