Our Wise Woman fossilized ivory pin and pendant is an archetypal imagining of the face of wisdom—tempered, tender, and available to all. Each detail is incorporated with intention from the woman's celestially inspired cloak to the faceted purple amethyst she wears. Amethyst is a semi-precious stone representing calm, balance, peace, and enhanced intuition. Intuition is perhaps the oldest and most integral of wisdom's diverse expressions. The wise woman's sun, star, and moon decorated cloak represent the universe and the ancient wisdom man has long sought by looking up toward the cosmos. She also wears a crown of 14kt gold fill flowers, signifying nature's eternal wisdom and rich maturity. One of our best-loved pieces from the silver goddess collection, this pin/pendant tends to take on a very specific and personal meaning for its owner.
The wise woman's serene features are hand carved from fossilized walrus ivory, a prized ancient material that has lain buried for some 500 to 3,000 years. Minerals in the earth color the walrus ivory a warm palette of cream to deep cocoa tones, though our artisans typically select the softer hued ivory for the wise woman's face. Fossilized walrus ivory is an important cultural and economic resource for the Native peoples who gather it. They use it in their own artisan carvings and make it available worldwide through sale and trade.
This carved ivory pendant also features a pin back, enabling you to wear it as two different types of jewelry.
