Otter Charm #3494

There are river otters and sea otters that are distinguished by habitat rather than physical differences. Maine estuaries and tidal inlets are great places to see these sleek furry creatures. Sea otters are clumsy on land and spend most of their lives in the water. River otters create slides from land to the water along river banks allowing them to slip into the water easily. River otters have poor eyesight so if you are still, they might not know you are watching them.

Other river mammals are muskrats and beavers. Muskrats are much smaller, have naked tails and well, they look like rats. Beavers have a flat tail that often paddles the water loudly. Otters are long and streamlined in the water with a furry tail that is about 1/3 of its total length. If it's furry and cute, it's probably an otter.

For more information about river otters checkout the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife website.
