Shell Charm #5613

5613

Shell middens or shell heaps can be found in various places in Maine. These are scrap piles or mounds were left by prehistoric peoples. The shells accumulated over centuries layer upon layer. Research of shell middens offer evidence of how Native American peoples migrated to the coast in late winter and early spring, then moving inland to farm and hunt for the rest of the year. The oyster shells and other materials left behind, help to tell their story.

One of the most famous is the Whaleback shell midden on the east bank of the Damariscotta River containing over 5 million cubic feet of material! The heaps began at least 2,200 years ago
