A sea turtle's journey from egg to ocean is an impressive migration to say the least. After several decades at sea, a female sea turtle will eventually return to the same beach where she was born. There she digs a hole in the sand, lays her eggs, and heads back out to sea. This pendant is a powerful tribute to the cycles we go through in life and the courage it takes to plunge into the unknown.

Turtle Pendant with Rainbow Moonstone

Sea turtles emerge from eggs buried in the sand and immediately embark on a solo journey across the beach and into the ocean water. With no parent to teach them what to eat, where to go, and what to do, these impressive creatures find a way to thrive. The odds are stacked against them, however. Due to predation, pollution, and poaching, on average only 2 of 1000 turtles will reach reproductive maturity. The fossilized walrus ivory used for the turtle’s shell is some 500 to 3,000 years old. It has lain buried in the earth for centuries where minerals stain it a range of rich colors from pale cream to deep coffee. The native Yupik of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, gather it for sale, trade, and carvings of their own. It is a valued resource for the Yupik, and is also revered throughout the art community for its quality and rich coloring.
